The History Behind Two More Unforgettable Hamptons Golf Courses https://hamptons.com/the-history-behind-two-more-unforgettable-hamptons-golf-courses/ Wed, 01 Nov 2023 15:48:17 +0000 https://hamptons.com/?p=135229 Last month, we covered the history behind Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the National Golf Links of America. This month, we’re going to dive into two other prestigious clubs on the east end. Just down the road from SHGC and NGLA is Southampton Golf Club, and get this: it was designed by Seth Raynor, a good friend of Charles Blair McDonald, the mastermind behind Shinnecock Hills and National. Seth Raynor was hired by McDonald to survey the construction of both SHGC and NGLA, and there's no doubt we can find some of McDonald’s influence on the greens of Southampton Golf Club. On the other hand, Atlantic Golf Club, which opened more recently in 1992, was developed by Lowell Shulman, who sought out the iconic golf architect Rees Jones to design his course. In its 27 years holding play, it has continued to rise in prestige to meet its east end predecessors.

Last month, we covered the history behind Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the National Golf Links of America. Seth Raynor was hired by McDonald to survey the construction of both SHGC and NGLA, and there’s no doubt we can find some of McDonald’s influence on the greens of Southampton Golf Club. On the other hand, Atlantic Golf Club, which opened more recently in 1992, was developed by Lowell Shulman, who sought out the iconic golf architect Rees Jones to design his course. In its 27 years holding play, it has continued to rise in prestige to meet its east end predecessors.

Atlantic Golf Club sits in the woods of Bridgehampton, New York, just 7 miles from Southampton Golf Club. Lowell Shulman bought the 204 acres, originally harvested and used as a potato field, knowing that it wouldn’t be easy to build a course that could hold up against Long Island’s rich golf history. A golf club hadn’t been built on Long Island since Noyac Golf Club’s opening nearly 30 years prior. Interestingly enough, the land surrounding Atlantic Golf Club sits flat and even, but the 204 acres, originally called “Breeze Hill,” has a beautiful natural rolling landscape perfect for the game of golf. After 35 acres were deemed as wetlands and couldn’t be used, Rees Jones was able to create a layout that worked with the natural scenery, thus Atlantic Golf Club came to be.

Unfortunately, just after Southampton Golf Club’s first season, Seth Raynor died of pneumonia at the age of 47 in 1926. Southampton Golf Club remained untouched until 1967, when William Mitchell was hired to modernize the course. But you can find a rendition from 1925 of Raynor’s original plans hanging in the clubhouse today. In the early years of the twenty-first century, there was a movement by Club President Vincent Armusewicz and other members to return the course to how Raynor intended all those years ago. Finally, in 2010, the reconstruction of the course was completed and hasn’t been touched to date. They will celebrate their 100-year anniversary in 2025, with the course looking as close to its original 1925 condition.

Stay tuned next month, where we’ll be covering Maidstone Club and Noyac Golf Club!

Coach Ralph Ruiz Reveals the Benefits of CrossFit at Southampton Gym

Ralph Ruiz is an enthusiastic advocate of CrossFit, and he believes that Southampton Gym offers a fantastic fitness facility due to its strong community. He emphasizes the quality of workouts and programming available at the gym and praises its convenient location. Southampton Gym is situated at the Southampton Jitney location on 395 County Road 39A, Southampton, New York (Route 27).

As the Head CrossFit coach, Ruiz takes pride in organizing group exercise classes at the gym. He describes CrossFit classes as “high-intensity functional movements” that last for an hour. Multiple classes are held each week, and although they operate independently, they are affiliated with the gym.

Ralph Ruiz, a graduate of East Hampton High School, explains that the CrossFit area is integrated with the bodybuilding section and all the gym’s machines and equipment, making it easily accessible. In his words, “CrossFit is in that same space.” Additionally, “Hamptons Jiujitsu” is also located there, providing a diverse range of fitness options.

When asked about Bruce Cotter, the managing director and owner of the company, Ruiz speaks highly of him: “Bruce has been great to work with. He is the one who has given me the opportunity to get this gym going again post the pandemic closure. It’s actually been going pretty well!”

Ruiz notes that things were slow at first, especially during the initial post-pandemic phase. However, as the gym entered its third summer, he began to witness the facility’s resurgence. He emphasizes that it is still in a growth phase, with people returning to the gym and feeling more comfortable with CrossFit workouts.

Ralph Ruiz has dedicated over a decade to CrossFit and defines it as “high-intensity functional movement.” CrossFit workouts aim to increase intensity through the use of barbells, weights, and cardio machines, including Olympic lifting. These components are combined to create hour-long workouts that typically begin with warm-ups, leading to the “workout of the day” (WOD). WODs involve strength exercises like bench presses, front squats, and back squats, followed by metabolic conditioning workouts. Any remaining time is dedicated to cooldown exercises.

Coach Ruiz conducts group classes with a strong focus on group exercise. Morning and afternoon classes are typically attended by around fifteen participants, while later in the day, five to six individuals might join. In the evening, an open gym session allows Ruiz to work one-on-one with clients. The age range of participants varies significantly, from Ruiz’s youngest trainee at nine years old to individuals in their seventies. Ruiz emphasizes that CrossFit is accessible to anyone, as he tailors workouts to fit each person’s age, physical condition, and capability, keeping the routines fresh and engaging.

This summer, the gym experienced high attendance, with an average class size of around twenty participants. The gym also welcomes weekend “drop-ins,” and even in the quieter winter months, it maintains a strong local following.

So, whether you’re looking to improve your physical fitness or simply want to feel healthier and more vital, a visit to Southampton Gym might be just what you need. After all, the age-old adage that a “sound body makes a sound mind” can only help in facing the challenges of the post-COVID pandemic world.

New York Pilates: A Refreshing Fitness Experience in The Hamptons https://hamptons.com/new-york-pilates-a-refreshing-fitness-experience-in-the-hamptons/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 14:24:10 +0000 https://hamptons.com/?p=135029 Just as trendy on the outside as it is on the inside, New York Pilates is taking over The Hamptons workout scene one town at a time. As you walk into any of their 4 Hamptons studios, you’re met with a mirror shaped like one of those trendy New York City bar signs that lets you know what time happy hour is this week, except there's a New York Pilates logo on it and no $10 margaritas in sight. All Hampton’s locations of NYP are fitted with a welcoming and fun aesthetic right from the start, but don’t get me wrong, I was very intimidated walking in on my first visit. (What isn’t intimidating to try for the first time.) Inside, your instructor greets you, checks your name off the list, and you’re free to enter the workout room. Inside there you’ll find the reformer machines lined up to choose from. Before getting into Pilates, I had never taken a single class or stepped foot on a reformer machine.

New York Pilates: A Refreshing Fitness Experience in The Hamptons

Just as trendy on the outside as it is on the inside, New York Pilates is taking over The Hamptons workout scene one town at a time. As you walk into any of their 4 Hamptons studios, you’re met with a mirror shaped like one of those trendy New York City bar signs that lets you know what time happy hour is this week, except there’s a New York Pilates logo on it and no $10 margaritas in sight.

The best thing I did during that first class was tell my instructor that I was a beginner as soon as I walked in. She was able to give me extra instruction during the class to perfect my form and show me the ins and outs of the machine before we started. The reformer machine itself is similar to a sled, held in place by hooks of different resistance. Take all hooks off, and the carriage moves seamlessly on its own. Leave one yellow hook on for little resistance, one blue hook on for medium resistance, or one red hook on for strong resistance. The room is dim but intentionally lit only by colored light bulbs, making each class feel less like a workout and more like a concert or bar.

If you’re like me, and working out isn’t exactly your favorite activity, this little detail made for an entirely different and interesting experience. The hardest part of working out for me is figuring out what to do in the gym and how long to be there, which now I realize is why so many people enjoy taking classes – no wait time for a machine or gym intimidation; someone’s there to fix your form and push you to get those last 10 reps in just when you think you’ve run out of juice. One of my favorite parts of discovering Pilates was that it is so easy on your joints and previous points of injury. Designed to be a low-intensity, muscle and core-focused workout, you’ll find there’s no jumping or running involved. That’s not to say that it is any less intense or endurance-based than the aforementioned, but it breeds a different type of strength. (Trust me, you’ll be surprised how such little but strategic movements can make you sweat just as much as 20 minutes on the treadmill.)

Each exercise requires deep focus on your balance while performing repetitive movements, which allows you to work towards building mental and physical stamina the same way you would while running long distances or sprinting intervals but just by taking a different approach.

My favorite part of each New York Pilates class is the intention that your instructor encourages you to set at the beginning of each class and reminds you of at the end. It’s like having your own personal cheerleader there to boost your mood and champion your little wins.

If you’ve been looking for a push to try something new, here it is. See you there!

The History Behind The Two Most Prestigious Golf Courses in The Hamptons https://hamptons.com/the-history-behind-the-two-most-prestigious-golf-courses-in-the-hamptons/ Sun, 17 Sep 2023 21:50:32 +0000 https://hamptons.com/?p=134110 With more than 140 golf courses across Long Island’s 118 Miles, the Hamptons is home to 15 of those courses two of which rank numbers 4 and 7 in the top 100 Golf Courses in the world. They say Long Island’s water makes for the best bagels, so it must be something in this soil that makes these famous greens.

In Southampton, Shinnecock Hills Golf Course runs side by side with National Golf Links of America. SHGC ranks number 4 worldwide, with NGLA following just behind at 7. Both courses have a history that’s as rich as its greens. SHGC and NGLA are what they call links courses, 1 of the six different types of courses in the game of golf. So what does that mean? Links style courses derive from the Old English term hlinc, translating to rising ground. These courses are designed to embrace the preexisting natural landscape, creating an obstacle-style course, usually found on sandy soil near coastlines, forcing golfers to battle the elements of rolling dunes and undulating hills. Some argue that sandy soil drains far nicer than a green found inland, making for a firm playing field.

National Golf Links of America was designed by golfer Charles B. Macdonald, who played in the second US Open in 1896 and is known for co-designing the original Shinnecock Hills Golf Club as well as 20 other courses across the United States and the world. After being sent at the age of 16 to St. Andrews University in Scotland, Macdonald fell in love with the then-novel game of golf. Many of the holes that he went on to design reflect the Scottish courses that he first played on in his youth. Macdonald even designed ‘template holes’ for other course architects to follow.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is nestled in 80 acres of sandhills between the Long Island Rail Road and the Shinnecock Canal. Those 80 acres were originally illegally taken from the Shinnecock Indian Nation by ‘settlers’ in or around 1859, to which American Businessmen Edward Meade and Duncan Cryder purchased the land from developers for about $2,500 in 1891.

Today, the initial membership fee to join SHGC is steep, amounting to a whopping half a million dollars. NGLA comes in at a little over $150,000, ensuring that only those in the top percentages of wealth can clinch a spot on their lists. Bordered by the Peconic and Bull Heads, NGLA guarantees water views from around 12 holes, and almost half the holes have views of that iconic windmill.

If you ever have the pleasure of playing a round on either course, look for the hints of Charles B. Macdonald that are still embedded in those greens. From his name plaque on the NGLA Windmill to the updates he spent the rest of his life adding to both courses– those unapologetic bunkers and bluffs have Macdonald’s name written all over them.

We all know that September is the best month in the Hamptons. The summer renters have mostly gone (we’ll miss you!). The weather practically demands that you go out for a walk. Maybe you’ve been too busy at the beach or planning activities for the kids, but now that it’s September, take a stroll, stretch your legs, and explore the rich, beautiful history around the Hamptons.

The East Hampton Historical Society is hosting Guided Walking Tours around the Hamptons all September long, so stay a while and listen.

I love walking tours not just because of the guides, who are great storytellers, but the company and conversations sparked with other attendees. We’re the kind of people you’ll see, hands on hips, squinting to read the well-worn plaque on a historical monument. The people who read those brown signs, who pick up and read the local leaflets at a museum or hotel lobby.

I won’t believe you if you haven’t been intrigued to discover what’s happening behind the bold, amber-colored farmhouse by the windmill in East Hampton Village. They’ve been renovating it based on strict Village codes (honestly, that alone is enough of a draw for me). Inside, you’ll explore the original woodworking shop where the Dominy family produced clocks in the late 1790s.

Are history buffs all know it alls? I don’t know about all that, but you’ll definitely be around a wealth of knowledge. In fact, you can become someone who knows something! Okay, hard sell aside, if you’ve never been on a Guided Tour with the East Hampton Historical Society, you’re missing out on a side of the Hamptons you might otherwise miss.

Sure, you know about the Pollack Krasner House, that’s meat and potatoes! Let’s go a little deeper—Have you been in the Moran Studio? The OG, the FIRST artist’s studio in the Hamptons, this quirky Queen Anne cottage was built in 1884.

The general pace for the walking tours is easy-going, making sure you have enough time to take in all the information and local lore.

Register HERE. All tickets are FREE for Members and $12 otherwise.

(1.5 miles, easy pace). Beginning with a presentation by Mary Mallios of the East Hampton Historical Society at the home of painter Thomas Moran. Mary makes this fun-loving painter and his life come alive. (Who knew he was instrumental in Yellowstone becoming a national park?) Afterward, we will walk the historic Ocean Avenue district where we will see the gorgeous summer “cottages” of East Hampton’s original summer colony and hear the stories of the wealthy families who followed artists like Moran to the Hamptons and introduced the iconic shingle style of building here.  Leader: Irene Daria, 917-854-5296, irene@stepstutoring.com

Southampton Village Ocean Rescue’s S-Mile Swim Challenge https://hamptons.com/southampton-village-ocean-rescues-s-mile-swim-challenge/ Mon, 14 Aug 2023 05:00:04 +0000 https://hamptons.com/?p=132822 Southampton Village Ocean Rescue will be hosting their second annual S-Mile Swim Challenge at Coopers Beach in Southampton on Saturday, August 19th at 7:00 a.m.

Swimmers participating in the challenge have a few options for the event. They can swim 1 mile, .5 mile, or .25 mile. Unlike last summer, the second annual challenge will be utilizing EliteFeats to time the event. Chief of SVOR, Alex King, said, “Last summer, many swimmers expressed their interest in knowing their times, some want a more competitive edge and striving for the win, while others want the challenge of pushing themselves to achieve their personal best, and some simply want to reach their goal of completing their chosen distance. We respect each individual's objective and are thrilled to be able to enhance the overall experience for the participants.”

Southampton Village Ocean Rescue’s S-Mile Swim Challenge

Southampton Village Ocean Rescue will be hosting their second annual S-Mile Swim Challenge at Coopers Beach in Southampton on Saturday, August 19th at 7:00 a.m.

We respect each individual’s objective and are thrilled to be able to enhance the overall experience for the participants.”

For the challenge, there will be the option for swimmers of whether or not they want to be timed or to swim at their own leisurely pace. Trophies will also be awarded for the first-place men’s and women’s divisions of each distance, and medals will be given out for second and third place. All participants will receive their S-Mile Swim shirt for being part of the event.

Another great addition to the second annual challenge is that of the Special Needs Swim, which will take place following the S-Mile Swim, and will begin at 9:00 a.m. Chief Alex says, “We deeply understand the significance of inclusivity in our events. SVOR is a volunteer first responder organization. Many of our members also volunteer to provide swimming, sailing, surfing, and/or other water-related activities to children and adults with special needs.” She went on to explain, “We are acutely aware of the considerable number of people residing in Southampton with unique needs, and we recognize the scarcity of events and functions tailored to meet their needs. Witnessing the smiles on their faces as they learn to enjoy the ocean is our emotional paycheck.”

The entire S-Mile Swim event will be lifeguarded by SVOR, and the Special Needs Swim will be lifeguard assisted.

Proceeds for the event will be raised for SVOR’s essential services. They are a volunteer first-responder organization that coordinates with several emergency agencies for any aquatic emergencies. Chief Alex King says, “SVOR is dedicated to making expeditious and safe water rescues year-round at all unprotected beaches in and around Southampton Village.” All their rescuers are ocean lifeguard- and CPR-certified, and they recognize that preventative lifeguard training is a key component to saving lives.

In addition to the lifeguard training program run by SVOR, this summer they formalized the adult ocean swim clinic. Alex says, “[This clinic] has proven to be very successful in drastically improving swim techniques. We hope our graduates will show off their newly acquired skills during the S-Mile Swim. We also encourage anyone who wishes to improve their ocean swimming to contact us. We would love to put more adult swim dates on the calendar this summer, and we will keep you informed for next summer. There is no charge for these classes!”

Every program, event, and fundraiser that Southampton Village Ocean Rescue holds is to work toward their ultimate goal of waterproofing Southampton. Alex says, “SVOR is primarily funded by the Village of Southampton and raises additional funds through Southampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue, Inc. We protect the unguarded beaches in Southampton, certified ocean lifeguards are on-call 24/7 year-round. SVOR also lifeguards numerous Hamptons water events and promotes water safety in the schools.”

The S-Mile Swim will aim to bring the community together, whether as a participant or spectator, in support of local emergency responders. Southampton Village Ocean Rescue can’t wait to see everyone in the water for this highly anticipated event!

Rasa Pilates, A Unique & Luxurious Hamptons Workout Experience

Looking for a unique and luxurious workout experience in the Hamptons? Located at 45 Skimhampton Rd in East Hampton, Rasa Pilates offers personalized 50-minute Pilates sessions for individuals, duets, or groups of up to 4 people.

Hamptons.com had the privilege of visiting Rasa’s studio for a private lesson and to learn more about her journey.

Originally from Lithuania, Rasa, the founder of Rasa Pilates, has been fascinated by the art of movement since her early years. After moving to the United States, specifically East Hampton, about 23 years ago, Rasa dedicated herself to mastering the English language.

Driven by a desire to explore movement on a scientific level, Rasa joined the PTA program at Suffolk County Community College, earning an associate’s degree in Applied Science and becoming a Licensed Physical Therapist. Rasa’s passion for dance and physical rehabilitation led her to Polestar Education, where she graduated as a certified Pilates Rehab professional.

After a decade of being a Pilates student and intensive training under Ellie Herman of Ellie Herman Pilates and Polestar Pilates Education, Rasa decided it was time to open her own studio in East Hampton.

Following a brief discussion about injuries and Pilates experience, participants will receive a personalized modern reformer Pilates workout. Rasa crafts tailored exercises to strengthen and stretch the body where it’s needed most.

Rasa shared with Hamptons.com, “Similar to dance, Pilates emphasizes technicality and movement quality. While an exercise may seem a certain way, without engaging the correct muscles, you won’t tap into their full potential. This is why the hands-on experience we provide is invaluable. Larger Pilates classes lack the one-on-one attention required for a workout like ours.”

Aside from teaching Pilates, Rasa’s love for movement goes beyond the dance studio and Pilates reformer. During her free time, Rasa spends her time swimming, biking, running, and even stand-up paddle boarding. When Rasa is not exploring how movement is a true therapy for her, she also proudly serves as an Ocean Rescue volunteer for East Hampton.

Rasa is always excited to see new faces in her studio, where she can share her many years of knowledge with you. To book your very first class and learn more, visit Rasa Pilates.
